I remember that from the Behind the Bastards podcast about Seagal!
And boy is that episode worth a listen, it's hilarious how wildly incompetent the guy is while he pretends to be a major badass. Another one of my favorite bits from the episode is how he brags about having SEAL training, then wasn't able to read a compass. Or the fact that he's in terrible shape (and is a terrible person).

u/ThatsNotMyDogma Mar 22 '23
he brags about having SEAL training
That was all about balancing a ball on his nose.
39
u/dutcharetall_nothigh Mar 22 '23
I was once at a festival where Seal played and there was this big beach ball that the audience was bouncing around, but then it blew onto the stage and Seal didn't balance it on his nose or even kick it back to the crowd.
1/10, do not recommend, very disappointing performance.

he brags about having SEAL training
To be fair (even though I hate the fucker) he's not lying, he just isn't telling the whole truth.
FACT -> He was trained for a few minutes by the SEALS at Wally's Aquatic Petting Zoo as a child.

Excellent, that's exactly what the Russian soldiers need, an ineffective combat style.
202
110
Mar 22 '23
Ineffective? I'm not sure the Ukrainians will know how to counter Seagal's new favored combat technique of fighting while seated on a swivel chair. They'll become further disoriented when the action freezes and they're suddenly confronted by their opponent's slimmer stunt double, now capable of ascending stairs.

It'll be hard for Russia to launch a human wave attack if everyone involved is just sitting down on chairs the whole time.

Awesome. Russians are going to be using bullshito, always finding new ways to bring up their casualty numbers.
Theres a reason you never see Aikido practitioners in any MMA competitions.

u/BostonUniStudent Mar 22 '23
This solves the problem of lack of adequate weapons for the soldiers. They can just charge into battle with karate chops.

I'm not sure if aikido is an actual martial art, but if it is, Segal definitely doesn't know it.
77
u/Mornar Mar 22 '23
Practiced correctly it'll definitely help you build some strength, endurance, coordination etc, while burning quite a few calories if that's what you're after. It will absolutely not teach you how to fight outside of an aikido dojo.

I feel like this is true for a lot of martial arts styles tbf. One reason I gave up the hobby (after many years and several styles) and just started doing more direct fitness activities for cardio etc since that’s what I suspect most of the benefit really was
29
u/Mornar Mar 22 '23
If you want to learn to actually fight just look what MMA fighters are using. I don't think it's much reason not to practice other styles if you're having fun doing so. We're not main characters in anime, most of us don't really expect to get in a fight, I do/did martial arts because it's a form of exercise I enjoy. I dabble in longsword now, similarily, not because I expect to go slaying villains with one, it's just cool as hell and equally as fun.

Boxing, BJJ, Wrestling, Muay Thai. Those are the big four and if you know any single one of them at a high level you’ll fuck up over 90% of the population, much less all of them.
The rest of them are a lot more niche and less useful, especially the more traditional ones

Aikido is real but kind of woo-woo nonsense depending on the school. The type of aikido Seagal has a lot of talk about ki and “powers”. Which is why there’s so many videos of him using his “powers” to throw people across the room a with flick of the wrist. Nevermind that it’s more scripted that a WWE match

Aikido is an actual martial art in the same way that Tai Chi is an actual martial art. There's martial arts that work in a fight and ones that don't, (or more specifically, there's methodologies where you train against a fully resisting opponent, and there's ones where you don't) and Aikido is generally one of the latter, but it is a martial art by definition.

Seagal, who also serves as the head instructor of the Russian Aikido Federation, said during the inauguration. “These arts can make this world a better place.”
In my opinion people who actively support the destruction of the West should automatically lose their citizenship with their Western country.
Call their bluff, make them put their money where their mouth is. Make them to live in the kind of world they support.

He would probably be more effective training them as competitive eaters so they could act as a swarm of human locusts.
4

I mean, they're running out of ammo. Makes sense to have them trained in hand to hand. But Segal doing it kinda reminds me of John Cleese's skit training a class how to defend themselves when attacked with various fruits.

Steven Seagal has launched an All-Russian Aikido Centre in Moscow that will primarily be used to prepare young Russians for army service.
The Hollywood actor was present at the inauguration ceremony at the Russian capital Monday, where he cut the ribbon to officially open the centre.
“I am very glad to be able to present this centre today and that aikido will develop here,” Seagal, who also serves as the head instructor of the Russian Aikido Federation, said during the inauguration. “These arts can make this world a better place.”
According to Russia’s state-affiliated media outlet Tass, the main objectives of the centre are to “increase the applied nature of aikido, develop various styles and directions of traditional and modern aikido, increase the general motivation of those involved - the opportunity to become a champion, receive a sports category, title, as well as prepare young people for service in the Russian Armed Forces.”
A sports and patriotic club is reportedly expected to start operating at the centre to “increase physical fitness” for service in the armed forces.
Seagal’s latest venture comes a few weeks after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to award the American actor with the state Order of Friendship. The decree cited Seagal’s “great contribution to the development of international cultural and humanitarian cooperation.”
The 70-year-old Seagal was awarded Russian citizenship by Putin in 2016 and has since been a regular visitor to the federation. He has also served as the Russian Foreign Ministry’s “special representative” to the United States, which led to former president Barack Obama being “flabbergasted.”
Seagal has also become a willing propagandist for the Kremlin. In August 2022, the Under Siege actor traveled to occupied eastern Ukraine, where he visited a prison camp run by Russian-backed separatists and spread Kremlin talking points.
Welp, guess we're done for now.
