Mod [mod] Self-post weekend is active - Introduce yourself and make friends!
Welcome to r/teenagers's self-post weekend. Self-post weekend is when we, the moderating team, disable link posts for the period of the weekend to encourage more discussion and less memes during our higher traffic period of the week.
In this thread we also encourage you, the community, to introduce yourselves. Post a parent comment reply, and let us know who you are, what your hobbies are like or maybe a weird quirky fact that could work as an icebreaker. In addition, we'd like to remind users not to include any personally identifying information.
Get to know one another more and Remember the Human behind that username! We encourage all users to comment and reply to each other's parent comment replies to meet the interesting members that comprises this community.
Looking for even more specific places to meet new friends and a sense of community? Visit our Discord server, where you can talk to each other in real time with a variety of topics that occur! Our Discord server is one of the top active servers you can join to participate, so never feel as if it's empty to join and discuss!

Mod [mod] r/teenagers stance on the upcoming API changes
For those unaware of the current situation please refer to this image and Reddit's response here.
There has been recent discussion within the community surrounding whether r/teenagers will be joining in the Reddit blackout on June 12th, this is where communities across Reddit are setting their subreddits to private in protest of the changes.
I recently made a comment to state how we have not yet made a firm decision but I worded it terribly and I do apologise for that. To summarise r/teenagers will be barely affected by the API changes as the security of the subreddit is based on first party tools and a bot that can work within Reddit's free tier.
However, there are other factors at play like accessibility features from third party apps. We have been informed by Reddit that they have plans to assist some of those who will be affected by the changes. After reading up on these plans they do seem beneficial to those that they apply to, however, we worry for those who those plans don't apply to.
Ultimately, we understand that Reddit is allowed to monetise their platform in whichever way they want, however, a costly premium for API calls per user can really stifle innovation and I can see Reddit getting more hurt over this change than benefitting from it as potential developers are scared off due to the price tag.
Therefore, after heavy discussion with our moderation team we have ultimately decided to join the Reddit blackout from June 12th to June 14th.
If you would still like the r/teenagers experience during that time then feel free to join our discord server (https://discord.gg/teenagers).
Thank you and have a nice day!
Edit: We will be keeping an eye on the situation and may revoke our decision if we see Reddit make sufficient changes that are beneficial to those affected by the API changes

Discussion Does anyone else get really uncomfortable around transphobic people?
I just feel uncomfortable, like sick to my stomach, when people say really transphobic things around me. Iโm not trans, though

Social My dad came out of the closet to me
okay so, there's some context for this.
i've grown up motherless, my dad never told me who my mom was, just that she abandoned us when i was born.
my grandparents also never told me who my mother was, but my grandma once said she "was really sweet and kind", which made me wonder why i never met her.
my dad also motivated me to be who i am without shame or judgement, and treat others with respect, which made me coming out as bisexual and non-binary to him easy (he/they pronouns btw).
but then 2 days ago, my dad said he needed to tell me something "important" to me, i was a bit skeptical about it, since he seemed nervous about telling me.
and he revealed to truth to me, and that i "already had met my mom" and she "never actually left"
i was confused by and, until he took out his shirt, and showed me his top surgery scars
yeah, i just found out my dad's a trans guy, and he also admitted to be bisexual to me.
he was nervous on telling me, that he had a boyfriend while he was still a girl, and that he was the one who got him pregnant, but when he came out as trans his bf left him and called him horrible things, it was a messy break up.
my grandparents were really supportive of him and, well the rest is history.
so yeah, a REALLY unexpected thing this pride month. but a welcomed one.
love you dad <3
