Trying to decide if you're a machinist/engineer or a computer guy. Obviously Z is forwards in most computer systems so that would make sense, but in machining Z is the direction that the part or tool sticks out. For that reason I'm leaning towards the latter.

Most 3D modeling/cad programs have settings to toggle them.
Personally I'm a z height guy as that's what max/milkshape/rhino used back in the 90s.
