That's the type of impact which makes you lose the ability to breath a couple of seconds.
I had a similar accident (surely not through surfing on a carpet slide). I can tell, it's a horrible feeling when you notice you cannot breath. And you cannot even tell anybody, since speaking requires breathing! Luckily, it seems the diaphragm resets itself after a while and you can breath again.

Yeah we used to call that getting the wind knocked out of you. Definitely had it happen to me playing hockey

u/MegaAscension Mar 23 '23
Had it happen to me playing soccer in high school. I played striker and I ran and jumped to get a header, and their approximately 300 pound defender (who played defensive line for the football team) bulldozed me in midair. I did nearly a full flip and got the wind knocked out of me when I landed on my back. Hopped up pretty quickly though. I then scored on the penalty kick. That was my athletic peak.

Happened to me when I fell off my horse both times and earlier when I fell off the jungle gym at school. Maybe thatās why Iām so messed up now

u/Wordsonanasiantshirt Mar 23 '23
Happened to me when my ex randomly punched me in the sternum while we were laying in bed. When I tried to sit up gasping for air he punched me in the thigh. I limped for 3 days. Real winner that one.

If that didn't break them then and there, they'll be feeling it in 10 years for sure.

Probably the best possible outcome. Would have been so much worse if she hit her neck on that.
4
u/MaryDellamorte Mar 23 '23
You can still break your neck from whiplash. The way her head jerked around, I would be surprised if she didnāt have some sort of neck injury.

u/chip_dingus Mar 23 '23
With how hard her head snapped sideways I'd predict she probably injured her neck from this. Right side nerve root compression and left side brachial plexus over extension. Both of those injuries can cause serious upper limb paralysis, paresthesia, and radicular pain.

u/dumbleclouds Mar 23 '23
I think the best outcome would have been if she didnāt fall over and made it down to the bottom

I expected her to fall much earlier, and I think that she probably wishes she did too.
3
u/willhunta Mar 22 '23
She fell as soon as the taller railing ended because that was the only thing supporting her up. It looks like she actually tried to stop her momentum by grabbing the tall railing hard at the end but that's what spun her into a backwards fall

u/Altruistic_Matter_76 Mar 22 '23
While holding a rail that ends prematurely. What was her exit plan????

People never stop doing obviously idiotic stunts. I get it if you are 8 years old but adults?

u/Upstairs_Addendum587 Mar 22 '23
As a 35 year old man with two younger children my primary goal at outings like this is to walk comfortably the next day.

u/Epancho16 Mar 22 '23
The problem is not the sliding itself, but her grip not providing any stability whatsoever.

Everybody is talking about ribs but I honestly think she'll have more problems with the right side nerve roots in her neck from compression and the left side brachial plexus from over extension. Remember folks, protect ya neck.

She would have been fine had she not tried to grab the rail to stop herself. That caused her upper body to swing to that side throwing her body off balance and down she went.
