The Tennessee fainting goat breed has a hereditary condition called myotonia congenita, a disorder that affects the skeletal muscles, which are used for movement. When the muscles are voluntarily contracted, such as in the act of running away from a potential threat, the relaxation of the muscle can be delayed.

The convenience of freezing up when you need to run…

Could argue that a predator might be dissuaded by such unnatural/unhealthy-looking behavior

Or just excited for a free lunch!

Yep. A blood thirsty predator isn’t going to stop because an animal falls, that I’m sure of

That you would be wrong. Many animals in the animal kingdom can detect when an animal is too unhealthy to eat and this is the defense mechanism employed by the species

Unhealthy is different from falling over mid run. But I’m open to be proved wrong with some studies where they do not get eaten after they fall.

Lots of places that raise livestock will keep fainting goats in with the more valuable animals so the predators eat the goats instead of the valuable animal.. Hope that adds a little clarity! Lol

Yea its convenient for reproduction. Humans that notice that the goats that freeze up are easier to slaughter, and therefore they breed them more.

How wrong is it that, while I understand that these goats have a life altering condition, I alway find it funny?

oh don't worry, they're all over the internet because everyone finds them hilarious 😂 and as far as I know, this condition doesn't do them any harm or stress, it's just goofy looking

u/Jonthrei Jun 09 '23
I mean they have essentially zero chance of surviving on their own...

right, which is probably why the only time we see this sort of mutation is in captivity! in the wild, these poor suckers would 100% be fresh meat

Huh, I had no idea these were from Tennessee.
Anecdotal but we had a few of these growing up, two of the three died while/after fainting, wound up selling the third.
Also eff goats just in general. We had ~100 and my summers were filled with jumping electric fences and goathouses to get away from the prickly fuckers when I just needed to feed then.

I’ve seen goats fall over but I’ve never seen one face-plant like the one in the middle.

I sometimes wish someone would crossbreed fainting goats and screaming goats for a maximum drama goat.

u/callingFives Jun 09 '23
I've read the phrase "threw their head back and laughed", but today I experienced it.
CRISPR classes, here I come. We're making drama.

How is their species still alive when they faint from a potential threat? This is an honest question. I’m curious.
