Love calories gotta be the funniest store name I’ve ever heard though.

There’s a store called Moose Knuckles at the Mall of America.
65
u/Cultural_Dust Mar 22 '23
I feel like they could either sell some random baked good (ie bear claw or pretzel bites) or women's athleisure wear.

u/Tyrus_McTrauma Mar 22 '23
Moose Knuckles is a brand, however. My wife has had one of their down-filled coats for years.
Is Love Calories a brand, or just the name of that boutique/chain?

US changed "Big & Tall" to "Casual Male."
These stores are right in your face with it.

When I was a "rather large gentleman" I used to strictly refer to it as "The Fat Guy Store" with all my friends and family. I took my kid brother with me shopping one day and when we got inside he exclaimed, " So this is 'The Fat Guy Store!' " so loud all my fellow tubbies turned their heads and shot him death glares as I hastily dragged him out of there.

u/absynthe-green Mar 22 '23
This reminds me of when I used to work retail, I had a gentleman ask me where the "Fat Guy department?" was.

My grandma did something similar once, I got my first internship and my mother took me to Lane Bryant for Professional Clothing that wasn’t a pantsuit or frumpy (many tears of frustration were shed in a Kohl’s changing room the day before).
Anyway. I get some actually cute and adorable clothes that are nice enough for an office. Grandma, who has never had a filter since I can remember, was visiting and was excited for a fashion show. My mom asks her mother if she’s ever heard of Lane Bryant. Grandma, off the cuff, goes “oh the fat lady store”
Grandma started watching what she said after that.

642
u/Neuchacho Mar 22 '23
Asian sizes are fucking tiny too. Like, I wear a US Small/XS depending on the brand here, but need a M/L in brands that use Asia's sizing measurements.
103
u/dksdragon43 Mar 22 '23
A lot of countries are like that. I'm from Canada which has similar sizing to the states. Went to Peru years back, bought some shirts at an outdoor vendor - couldn't try them on there. Got back to the hotel and realized a full inch of midrift was showing. Their larges are freaking tiny, length-wise.

Lol, there's an American woman I follow who moved to Japan and her Japanese medical records call her obese there because she weighs like 150lbs, but she's also 5'10". So she's as skinny or nearly as skinny as normal Japanese women, but their whole system just can't account for women who are not small because of how small Asian women typically are. I find it hilarious.
→ More replies114
u/SeskaChaotica Mar 22 '23
I’m relatively small so I would go nuts in clothings stores in Korea and Singapore when I’d travel there for work. In the US and Canada I’m a 00-4/XXS to S, because sizes are made up numbers. But over there I’m just normal and not in the little petite section off to the side.
→ More replies40
u/NotLucasDavenport Mar 22 '23
I lived in Korea years ago and in my smaller town the bra sellers would basically throw product at me. They rarely sold it, I was in the market for bras…and the perfect ending to the story is that they were all still too small for me. Of course.
134
u/Techygal9 Mar 22 '23
That’s because American clothing shifted while others stayed the same. I’m a U.S. S but some old clothes from my mom I’m a medium. The truth is I’m very midsized not small (although I am petite height wise).
→ More replies62
u/-CactusJuice Mar 22 '23
Wow this makes so much sense now, buying clothes in the US is annoying cause the sizes are never consistent lol I’m either a S or M depending on how the clothes fit. It’s gotten to the point where if I order online I’ll grab a S and a M, see which one fits better and return the other

I went to Thailand when I was in my 20s. I weighed 63kg (138lb) and had a pretty small waist. I bought one skirt. It was the biggest size they sold, and even then I grew out of it in about a week. It’s ridiculous there.
168
u/MyPasswordIsMyCat Mar 22 '23
I'm not fat by American white girl standards, like 135 lbs/5'5", but when I went to Shanghai and tried to get a silk dress, the shop brought out an XXL and it was still too tight in the hips. I was like a cow to them.
128
u/CrispyVibes Mar 22 '23
My friend went to Korea and went clothing shopping. She walked into some store and all they carried were XS and S of everything. When she asked for a larger size the store said they don't make anything larger because they don't want fat people wearing their clothes.
Had a similar experience in Thailand. Went to a higher end retailer that only sold one size of men's pants.

u/NYanae555 Mar 22 '23
True. People think its all about "fat." Its not. Eurpean women have hips. Even I have hips. I'm 123 lbs and I have 38-39 inch hips. I have a wider skeleton than most east asians do.
→ More replies→ More replies9
u/DylanHate Mar 22 '23

Remember when I travelled to China a few years ago, was walking along the shopping district in Shanghai and saw a t-shirt in a window display that looked good. I went inside to look but the XL sizes were tiny!
I stopped a middle aged woman that worked there to ask if they had larger sizes, she just looked me from head to toe and declared "too fat, too fat!" and walked off 🤣

u/Mr_Badr Mar 22 '23
In 1962, Elliot and Roslyn Jaffe started Dressbarn to help women in the workplace find designer clothing at a discount. The name was born from the initial item they were selling, dresses, and in the '60s the term “barn” noted value or discount. (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/21/business/dressbarn-closing.html#:~:text=In%201962%2C%20Elliot%20and%20Roslyn,barn%E2%80%9D%20noted%20value%20or%20discount)

Giving us Mexicans a competition when it comes to being straight up about our insecurities
11
u/RedditedYoshi Mar 23 '23
I don't know how anyone could live in Mexico without getting fat. One of my oldest, and fondest, food memories is my dad leaving me on a street corner in Ensenada while he renewed a license in an official building. He left me several quarters, and told me to get some fish tacos from the lady with the cart. Quarter a pop, hot, delicious, fresh. My God, I'll never forget that woman. XD

Edit: U.S. sizes are typically five sizes larger. For example, a U.S. size 4 would be a Japanese size 9. U.K. sizes are typically one size larger. For example, a U.K. size 8 would be a Japanese size 9.

thats actually something I heard about China, they were very blunt about descriptions
→ More replies226
u/CannonFodder141 Mar 22 '23
It's more like, having learned English is a second language, they don't necessarily know the nuances and polite alternatives that go with the word "fat."
I can kind of relate. I studied a little Spanish in school. I know exactly one word for fat (Gordo) and I have no idea whether it's offensive, endearing, or something in between.
I lived in China for a while, and my students, who spoke excellent English, horrified my co-worker by repeatedly calling her fat. They had no idea they were being offensive.
86
u/Its1207amcantsleep Mar 22 '23
Growing up in asia people are just more blunt when it comes to weight.
I think culturally it was just that way. You're fat, they'll tell you you're fat and need to lose weight (at the same time plying you with food--my aunts, grandmothers, and my mother *rolls eyes*). Its not the intent to be offensive, just facts and not knowing that weight comments are generally taboo in western culture.
Family parties may end up with comments of hey you lost weight, you look good but look how flat your boobs are.
→ More replies26
u/JJDude Mar 22 '23
yes, telling you your fat or out of shape is a way to show caring, because you will never say that to a stranger.
111
u/Schmichael-22 Mar 22 '23
My work colleague, who is Korean, showed me a photo of his wife when we were talking about family. He said, without prompting, “She is very fat.”
79
u/acelana Mar 22 '23
Believe it or not that’s considered polite. It’s rude to boast about your own family, so people will say negative things about them when speaking to non family members. It’s considered being humble as your family is an extension of who you are so by humbling them you’re humbling yourself
16
u/itsadesertplant Mar 22 '23
Well now I’m even more nervous about meeting my Korean partner’s family for his sister’s upcoming wedding
21
u/DeskJockeyMP Mar 22 '23
Don’t be nervous! I have no other information except the two preceding comments but it sounds like to break the ice you should show them a picture of your family and say “Look at these fat sacks of shit. Look at them. I am descended from dumpster people who eat and fuck shit.”
That should show them that you’re humble.

They had no idea they were being offensive.
Because they are not. In Chinese, 胖 (fat) is not considered an offensive word. It's even used in greetings between friends or older generation to the younger one: 你怎么又胖了? (How did you get fatter again?) It's meant to convey that the person has been doing well. Even when it's used to describe a person who's actually fat, it's used as-a-mater-of-factly.
