Accent walls scare me, but I’m glad we took a chance on one in our living room LIVING AREA

Man I’m really loving green accent walls now. This looks great.

Having just bought 8 samples of green tonight, I am worried I won’t know the difference
212
u/keevenowski Mar 22 '23
I’m so worried for when they go out of style because my whole house is going to need repainting. Love me some green.

u/ItsTricky94 Mar 22 '23
Who cares if it says in style or not. As long as you love it that's all that matters!

Yes but what if what I like is subconsciously informed by what’s popular at any given time because I have a dumb monkey brain with a deeply ingrained tendency to follow the crowd?

Green is classic don’t worry Do you think Hobbits would care that the cream coloured walls in their hobbit holes are passé according to some people
55
u/KaseyJrCookies Mar 23 '23
I don't know half of the color palette half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of it half as well as it deserves!
40
u/ONLY_COMMENTS_ON_GW Mar 23 '23
That's something Hobbits would absolutely care about those gossipy fucks
12
u/rangda Mar 23 '23
You can’t see them painting bright red accent walls or putting up floating cube shelves like those early 00s trends though right?

While house hunting, I saw some 70s wallpaper with tons of cartoon people in various states of undress in a master bathroom.
I loved it, and I'm glad the sellers kept it. If the buyer didn't love it, they could cover it after outbidding me. But it's part of why I liked that house.
You do you, let the next person decide what's for them.

That is a classic!!!
7
u/Probablynotspiders Mar 23 '23
I love how normal everyone looks. Nothing salacious, nothing airbrushed
16
u/VibraniumRhino Mar 23 '23
Stop worrying about it. That’s for the next homeowners. You think people in the 70’s thought about anyone else at all as they layered their houses with cheap wooden paneling and stucco ceilings? Not. A. Chance.

6
u/rockstaa Mar 23 '23
Then repaint it. Life is too short to live with colors you don't like. It's what... a few buckets of paint and a weekend of work every 7-10 years? Worth it.
15
u/callshouse Mar 23 '23
People…. How much of a chance is it to take? It’s one wall.
5
u/keevenowski Mar 23 '23
When one wall becomes all the walls 😳
5
u/SuperMundaneHero Mar 23 '23
That’s not really an accent wall then is it? Unless all your walls are different shades so they’re all accent walls…
2
2
u/Visible_Lettuce_4670 Mar 23 '23
One way to mitigate this is to follow the trends, however, when you go to pick colors for your walls try to stick with colors that are “timeless.” There are colors that are “always” in style. For example, certain greys, creams, whites, blues, yellows, greens, blacks, etc. Sometimes it’s less about what colors you’re using and more about how you’re using it. Are you pairing white, grey, and black? It will likely never go out of style? Are you pairing red, brown, and yellow, with orange? Your thanksgiving theme might go out of style.
Second, you DO NOT have to repaint your house every time things change. IT IS, however, more than fine if you like to update your house that often.
Third, your home is yours. Unless you’re putting it on the market tomorrow, have fun, get freaky, and live whatever dream you currently have for your house. You will be happier and more comfortable. And remember - what you do doesn’t always have to be in style, it can be totally fun too!

So many nice greens out there! Pink on the other hand I hope I never see on a wall again. Previous owner of my place painted EVERY room pink except one bathroom was purple and a bedroom was bright teal. I had to paint EVERY WALL in this place to be able to stand living here.
My kitchen and dining room is currently a lovely jade green and I LOVE it. Gosh I’d be okay with my whole house being that color lol

Is that one of those self cleaning litter trays in the left corner? If so do you recommend?
188
u/jnicholass Mar 22 '23
We’ve had it for about 6 months now, and our only real complaint is how bulky it is. Be sure to check the dimensions and plan ahead on the placement.
Otherwise, yeah, it’s super convenient and basically odorless now. We only have to replace the bag every week and a half with two cats.

u/flowercup Mar 22 '23
My cat must be a super pooper. I replace her bag every week!

Also, love the color!! What’s it called??

Litter Robot
It’s a little overpriced, but they were one of the first big names in the automatic litter box market and I guess they can charge a premium because of it lol
Edit: the color is Positively Palm by PPG

As a heads up, mine (Litter Robot 4) from last October/November started acting up a few months in, and slowly got worse over time. I'm not sure if they fixed it in subsequent batches. You have to wipe the sensor area even if there's nothing visible there, and manually cycle every day or so.
Writing a review on their site finally got support to reply beyond a canned response, but I did pay extra for warranty because of the reviews I read with the same problem before I bought.

u/Dlowden Mar 23 '23
Did you ever own the 3? I've been thinking of getting the 4 eventually but apparently it is a lot harder to self service it in comparison
5
u/DullAlternative Mar 23 '23
Not sure how hard it is to service but the 4 is whisper quiet compared to the 3 which makes it worth the upgrade IMO. They’re both equally prone to getting stuck upside down due to sensor faults though. I started using a smart outlet to force it to reboot whenever it gets stuck.

Yep but manually cycling or powering off and on through the app only works for me when it gets “cycle interrupted” errors over and over, but it doesn’t fix “cat sensor fault” errors

I had one of the original Litter Robots. Bought it in 2006 for $399. It lasted for 13 years, survived a flood and I was able to replace the motor & one sensor. I just got the newest model, the 4. It's definitely fickle, however I'm happy with it if it does its job & I just have to check laser sensors. I'm not sure if you're able to replace components like the older models though.
1
u/olbez Mar 23 '23
I have two of the 3rd ones. Like the look of the 4 better but yeah, 3 sounds to be a lot more serviceable
1
1
u/effective_seven Mar 23 '23
I have not owned the 3. I did see they were selling replacement electronic components for the 4, if I'm not mistaken, for people who were out of warranty and going through issues. I don't know if the replacement parts fix the issue though, if it's a design issue.

We have one by PETKIT that works pretty great. It’s flat on top so you can put a plant or something on top, and much more aesthetically pleasing than the litter robot (no offense OP, the room looks great regardless). However, the opening is a little on the small side (one of my cats is like 15lb). 100 dollars less than the litter robot as well. Point being, it’s worth it to shop around a little!

We just bought our second one in 7 years, or so. Absolutely love it.
23
u/keevenowski Mar 22 '23
We got one a couple months ago and it is fantastic. Occasionally has some sensor issues but not deal breakers. Just happens when it gets dirty. It’s great only having to change the bin weekly and having zero smell.
That said, we also paid $900 for the package and that cost is… high.
18
u/jnicholass Mar 22 '23
The sensor issues I had were due to the back touching the wall. Apparently there’s a weight sensor that’s very sensitive and my errors went away when I moved it off the wall
11
u/keevenowski Mar 22 '23
Oh that’s good to know. My sensor issues were with the cat-detector-laser getting dusty (I think). After I dusted them it went back to normal
3
u/ItsTricky94 Mar 23 '23
OK apparently I really am living under a rock because I've never even heard of this! What a brilliant invention. watching videos ! I hate the thought of all that dust going into a kitty's lungs and mine... plus smell. i'm almost ready to adopt again and this might be a worthwhile investment. does it come with a warranty?
2
u/Dlowden Mar 23 '23
I don't know if it is any different in the US but when I got one it had a 90 day money back trial and a 12 month warranty.
2
u/keevenowski Mar 23 '23
Yeah, I paid extra for their 3 year warranty. I believe 1 year is standard. Zero smell! It works great. I highly recommend it if you can budget for it. Also cut down litter tracking by like 95%
1
u/divisionbyzer0 Mar 23 '23
What brand of litter do you use?
2
u/keevenowski Mar 23 '23
I buy their clay litter. It’s a bit pricey but I know it works and it gets delivered
2
u/tans1saw Mar 23 '23
Is it quiet?
2
u/keevenowski Mar 23 '23
We ordered the 4 and it is very quiet. Apparently the 3 was noisier but I would have no concerns about the 4 being near a bedroom.
2
u/tans1saw Mar 23 '23
I’m about to purchase the 4 for $700. Please tell me it will be worth it 😅
4
u/keevenowski Mar 23 '23
It’s worth it! No smell and minimal tracking! We used to find litter everywhere in the house 🤢

u/Caustik420 Mar 23 '23

u/Elegantdorito Mar 23 '23
Was scrolling through the comment just to find what this space-like contraption is. Thank you 🫡
4
u/BareKnuckleKitty Mar 23 '23
The reason I wouldn’t recommend self cleaning litter boxes is because your cats poop can tell you things about their health. If your litter box self cleans then you can’t keep an eye on that. Blood, diarrhea, etc.
4
u/TheRavenSayeth Mar 23 '23
You’ll see all of that when you empty the waste tray. All the litter robot does is do the scooping for you into a garbage bag.
-3
u/BareKnuckleKitty Mar 23 '23
Eh, still don’t know about that. Some of these comments are saying they only change the bag once a week. I’d want to know a lot sooner if my cat was pooping blood or having diarrhea.
2
u/TheRavenSayeth Mar 23 '23
That’s definitely up to each owner but I think for most people those are fairly uncommon. In my case I’ve got two cats so I change it twice a week. Also if they have some minor blood or diarrhea then in my experience, even with a regular litter box, it passes on its own in a few days without intervention
My cats are indoor cats so that factors into how I’m weighing their exposure risks.

Looks great. Read another comment of yours about the dimensions of the litter robot. They are larger than expected. But keeping it in your living room??? Is there truly no other space it could go? I have two and thankfully have a basement to keep them in. Would never have a litter box near a common living space.

I was skeptical on accent walls too, but some colors would really be "too much" painted on every wall, but just right on a single wall. Especially very dark colors that would make the entire room feel small and dark if painted on all 4 walls.
