Not 100% sure of the context here. But I've seen this quite a bit. I'm part of a local whiskey club and we frequently get vendors in that do free tastings. They share info about the product and we get to learn more about their stuff. I don't think we've ever paid, but we almost always get to try to higher end ($100-$150/bottle) stuff.

It's honestly more of a sales pitch than anything else. We all usually leave with a bottle or two, and maybe some swag from the vendor. We always look forward to them.

It isn't anything fancy like Whiskey or Wine but when I was in Uni I worked as a Rep for Mikes Hard Lemonade and we'd have tastings and sample giveaways at bars all the time. We'd roll up with a bunch of new flavors of Mikes, a box of t-shirts and two promo girls handing out samples. Usually we'd contact the bars because the bars that would contact us were often not busy enough for it to be worth our time.

Same kinda deal, just a different audience

do they also bring two 20 year old girls in skin tight shirts to flirt with you? That was the best part of the job.

I wish... Usually a middle aged dude with a bit of a gut. But they were always heavy on the "tasting pours" that were proper glasses.

Woah, you're in America right? Isn't 20 under the legal age?

I am Canadian, 19 is the drinking age in my province.

This sub is fascinating.

Almost all the content is straight begging. Not to say it doesn’t belong here, but whenever I see someone post an actual choosing beggar, there are always people in the comments saying it doesn’t belong here.

Truly perplexing.

Point taken - I should have given some context - new to posting and not just lurking.

The post is in a Moms Group on behalf of For Profit Private Tennis club in a Fancy Suburb, I am sure if I turned up with anything other than fancy wine/liquor - free or not, I would be turned away.

That is indeed choosy begging.

Snobbery at its finest.

Meh it's pretty standard where I live for wine and spirit purveyors and makers to have tastings. The only difference is that this person wants to host in her establishment meaning she probably doesn't have a dedicated sommelier or buyer to manage her purchasing or make her offerings trendy.

Yes, I could see that with a corporate product like that. In my area, the wineries, breweries, and spirit producers all have their own tasting rooms/restaurants. It's a whole thing now. Back when I worked in a bar, we would get folks like you coming by, that's how we got Samuel Adams when they went national.

Sounds like it’s more than just a tasting, sounds like she wants enough for everyone attending her party, which would be several bottles I would guess.

Where I come from, we pay professionals for their services as a show of respect and thanks for their skills and efforts. I think it’s that way for most people.

Tell them your great uncle died and you inherited some ‘62 Bordeaux that you’d like to sample and hopefully unload. Get a couple of empty wooden cases of Chateau Lafite Rothschild. Fill it up with Franzia jugs. Show up in nice outerwear with a couple of friends when it’s crowded. When no ones really paying attention, connect your phone to a big ass Bluetooth speaker and play bad ‘90s dance music so loud that the sound distorts. Peal off nice outerwear, revealing extremely trashy club clothes and start grinding on tennis moms. Pop open the bottles of Franzia and start pouring it into your friends mouths. Make sure you make a mess. Take off with a getaway driver you have standing by.

Sounds like a mission on GTA to ruin a business.

Whats weird is it partially sounds like the invitation is for representatives of Wineries/distilleries to bring their product to an event for tasting and if it's a hit they will order the product in the cafe/clubhouse. Then it's clearly kind of not the case though, so I'm not sure what the poster means by happily purchasing bottles.

When I see an actual choosing beggar I point out its a unicorn of a post that actually fits the rules.

Like look to your right and see the 10 rules for posting. 95% of the posts here do NOT apply to both rule 6 and 7. The person MUST be a beggar AND the person MUST be choosy.

Most of the content is just someone begging or haggling the price of an item.

Yeah this sub seems impossible to reason with.

They've gone down the same path as r/PublicFreakout and r/iamatotalpieceofshit they're addicted to the outrage, and don't really care about the specifics.

So only ladies?

What is with all these people and their promise of “exposer”? Do they all really think they are that important?

1

u/Substantial_Will_385 Mar 23 '23

Does this ever work?

2

u/Cautious_Hospital_84 Mar 27 '23

Yes, actually. It’s called “Activating.” I run a liquor company and we do this at least 5 days a week, typically more. In fact we have an entire team of Brand Ambassadors whose job is solely tastings. Giving out tasters to our target demographic is the best way to convert customers to consumers.

u/Substantial_Will_385 Mar 28 '23

I get that. I've seen bars that I go to do it as well. But isn't it always the liquor company that initiates contact with the bars and offers free samples/tastings, instead of a bar requesting them from whomever will oblige?
