Imagine hiring someone without taking a look at their prices?!?

Don't settle for "send whatever you want". You set a price, they pay it or they don't get the product. Otherwise you just encourage them to try this again in the future.

I had already sent them the renders and doing so made myself a huge moron. I'll be careful next time.

112

u/ruready1994 I can give you exposure Mar 20 '23

We live and we learn. Glass half full: there is value in experiencing life lessons, and in the grand scheme of things $20 is a cheap yet valuable lesson.

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce Mar 20 '23

Oooh. I feel annoyed for you. What tossers

31

u/Soupsocks97 Mar 20 '23

Have they sent the money? I’m sorry you got taken advantage of, OP

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

Thanks for the kind words, they have not paid me as of writing this comment.

u/mnemloch Mar 20 '23

After 30 days send an invoice with a late fee.

3

u/NaszPe Mar 30 '23 edited Mar 30 '23

Then make a script that periodically sends it again.

6

u/mnemloch Mar 30 '23

with a compounded late fee

2

u/Alive-Throat4795 Apr 04 '23

Make the late fee 280$. And recurring every month unpaid.

32

u/AnRealDinosaur Mar 21 '23

Yeah sorry to say but you're probably not seeing any of that. I usually send people super low res images of stuff if they haven't paid yet. Honestly I'd be iffy of doing any work before it's been at least partially if not completely paid off. Sorry they scammed you man. Happens to the best of us though.

13

u/bethemanwithaplan Mar 21 '23

You're not getting paid , the bulk message thing shows what they were doing

12

u/phara-normal Mar 21 '23

If the client hasn't paid yet but wants the renders already you need to put a watermark on there so they cant use it. Also, 20$ for product renderings is way too low.

7

u/Leg_Mcmuffin Mar 21 '23

Live and learn. Don’t forget that people are shitty - even on Reddit (even more so).

8

u/ItsJoeMomma Mar 21 '23

One word: watermark.

4

u/Internal_Set_6564 Mar 21 '23

$20 for your work is extremely cheap, and they are being absurd. Make sure to shame them if they fail to pay you.

3

u/Jusfiq Mar 21 '23

I had already sent them the renders…

You delivered the finished product without getting paid first? SMH.

3

u/Spacecoasttheghost Mar 21 '23

Always get half up front, in case shit goes sideways like it did. They knew what they were doing, and were never going to pay you what you posted, people can really suck ass.

3

u/GenderNotDefined Mar 21 '23

Yeah, when I read it I was assuming you had already forked over the art. Live and learn. My BIL was banned from Venmo because he had to do a chargeback after paying a meth addicted contractor in advance

1

u/ItsJoeMomma Mar 21 '23

Yes, because then they'll send $1.

u/Pissedtuna Mar 21 '23

I taught my wife this lesson. We jokingly play around in the bedroom that I pay her for sex. So one time after we did the deed she told me that would be $200. I told her you should always get your money before rendering your services.

6

u/fiavirgo Mar 25 '23

I didn’t realise this was boomer facebook

70

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce Mar 20 '23

Artists should get together and start doing a mass block of anyone who does stuff like this. Everyone who says about exposure, much cheaper prices, freebies. Just mass block them all. Even make it like an online movement of blocking 🎨 🖼

4

u/jayessmcqueen Mar 21 '23

This is a great idea, and helps artists work toward a common goal of being paid properly for their work/skills. I assume these people who want artwork for free will eventually be the main supporters of ai generated “artworks”.

u/RckYouLkeAHermanCain Mar 20 '23

I'm genuinely scared of people that think $20 is a lot of money in 2023 dollars.

Like how do these people live? You can't get any kind of service much less custom work for $20 dollars. $20 may as well be $1.

31

u/rockos21 Mar 20 '23

$20 is a bloody sandwich. 2 renders? I imagine that this wasn't just using your computer to spit out a still image of a 3d model the purchaser sent to the vendor.

25

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

Sent me a model I had to remake add materials and render out 4k images , not going to lie and say it was a really demanding job but for 20$ I think it's a good deal.

35

u/terpin Mar 20 '23

Buddy you offered them an amazing deal, I would have charged 5x what you asked for a friend, much less some haggling piece of shit like this guy.

6

u/rockos21 Mar 21 '23

At a very minimum, you should consider the minimum wage per hour. I doubt this was less than an hours work, especially when factoring in the communications you have had with him too.

2

u/SrCikuta Mar 23 '23

I charge 150+ per image for importing a model into a premade white sweep and rendering with my material library. How do you think 20 is a good deal for you????

2

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 23 '23

Damn man, throw me a couple of your clients hahaha. Jokes aside I'm still inexperienced and figuring things out. Not sure how to find clients and don't want to overcharge for my skill level.

2

u/SrCikuta Mar 23 '23

I have almost 20yrs working on architectural and product rendering. Have my own studio now. I would recommend you find a job in a studio, you a learn a lot working in an established business, plus you learn about project managing and client relations. Project managing not only means managing the workforce, but also setting a workflow and pipeline. Don’t learn everything by yourself, you’ll pick up lots of bad habita you’ll need to hnlearn when working as a part of a team

2

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 23 '23

Great advice, thanks a lot 😊

10

u/Z-man1973 Mar 20 '23

What pisses me off is the customer thinking $20 is expensive… artists always seem to get the shaft…

2

u/infernoxv Mar 21 '23

artists and musicians…

27

u/freakishgnar Mar 20 '23

$20 for two renders isn't cheap?? Dude, F this guy

15

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

The thing is I don't even mind if they think it's expensive it's the fact that they found me via a post that includes my prices and only when I finish the work they tell me. If they just told me "I don't like it I'm not going to pay or use this" I wouldn't have had a problem.

22

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

Well since apparently I make art for free I might as well do it for some nice people. If anyone wants some free pixel art ( portrait , oc , pet, favorite characters or small landscapes ) Hit me up.

12

u/Ashamed_Blackberry55 Mar 20 '23

But we have to be nice? Pretty sure that means I'm out...

12

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

Well can't scam me if its free so that means your in!

5

u/swinginachain1 Mar 20 '23

Hey I am interested in some pixel art of the dnd party I dm for. It would be 6 characters total. I would be able to send you pictures of the characters currently. How much do you think that would be?

-4

u/shebringsthesun Mar 21 '23

what is pixel art?

2

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 21 '23

Art style used by old games and such

5

u/VioletBlades Mar 20 '23

I’m sorry this happened… did they pay you? Your prices are more than fair. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your prices!

5

u/Azreona Mar 20 '23

Now proceede to send them ”ads” everyday

3

u/swagmasterdude Mar 20 '23

You render blender models? Can you DM me your info

3

u/GenderNotDefined Mar 21 '23

So what did he end up sending?

3

u/Justsaying_it Mar 21 '23

Why would you do the work without the payment in advance?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 24 '23

If they haven't paid, and you find the image anywhere, you will probably have a case against them for copyright infringement. Google says you could get up to $30k, for each work infringed, in a lawsuit.

2

u/Z-man1973 Mar 20 '23

You can send them the renders, heavily watermarked and diminished file quality so they can’t use them

2

u/MorningRose666 Mar 20 '23

After having a similar situation I would only go as far as sketching/ base work then send it to the client for final tweaks and ask them to pay before finishing. I’d bend for half if they’re too hesitant but they’re not getting anything usable until they pay in full. Might turn some people away but it’s covering your time/ sanity and that’s the important thing at the end of it all. Hope this is just a bad egg for you 💕

2

u/get_in_the_tent Mar 21 '23

In architecture you'd expect about $2000-$5000 per render, this seems like an absurd transaction to me arguing over $20. Like are you just doing this as a hobby? Or you're in a country with a favourable exchange rate?

2

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 21 '23

Lot of factors actually, where I live it's 2$/h minimum wage so it's a solid buck. It's a hobby and I'm still learning the ropes and I'm strapped for cash as my pc is dying so I'm offering cheap work so I can get some money to upgrade it.

2

u/DonaldTrumpIsARetard Mar 20 '23

Curious on the conversation prior to the work being done

8

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23

Just the details of what needed to be done, he sent me a model I ended up remaking and the usual details of what the render needs to look like. Based username btw!

1

u/Thediciplematt Mar 21 '23

Yeah dude, same industry. Ef this guy. Those are slave labor cost.

1

u/EdgeXL Mar 21 '23

They 100% knew your rate. They're playing dumb to get out of paying you.

In the future please watermark any assetts that have not been paid for.

1

u/akathatdude1 Mar 21 '23

Please blast this piece of shit and his business practices, no one should have to endure this, I’m sorry OP. Make sure this guy feels $20 worth of bullshit for his absurdity

1

u/designedbyai_sam Apr 29 '23

That sounds like the sort of situation where you rely on an AI to give you the best value for your money - it's a great way to ensure you're optimizing resources while still getting maximum benefit.

0

u/Electr_O_Purist Mar 21 '23

Poor guy is out $40. Absolute nightmare. There but for the grace of god go thee.
