Imagine hiring someone without taking a look at their prices?!?

Artists should get together and start doing a mass block of anyone who does stuff like this. Everyone who says about exposure, much cheaper prices, freebies. Just mass block them all. Even make it like an online movement of blocking 🎨 🖼

This is a great idea, and helps artists work toward a common goal of being paid properly for their work/skills. I assume these people who want artwork for free will eventually be the main supporters of ai generated “artworks”.

I'm genuinely scared of people that think $20 is a lot of money in 2023 dollars.
Like how do these people live? You can't get any kind of service much less custom work for $20 dollars. $20 may as well be $1.

$20 is a bloody sandwich. 2 renders? I imagine that this wasn't just using your computer to spit out a still image of a 3d model the purchaser sent to the vendor.

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23
Sent me a model I had to remake add materials and render out 4k images , not going to lie and say it was a really demanding job but for 20$ I think it's a good deal.

u/terpin Mar 20 '23
Buddy you offered them an amazing deal, I would have charged 5x what you asked for a friend, much less some haggling piece of shit like this guy.

At a very minimum, you should consider the minimum wage per hour. I doubt this was less than an hours work, especially when factoring in the communications you have had with him too.

I charge 150+ per image for importing a model into a premade white sweep and rendering with my material library. How do you think 20 is a good deal for you????

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 23 '23
Damn man, throw me a couple of your clients hahaha. Jokes aside I'm still inexperienced and figuring things out. Not sure how to find clients and don't want to overcharge for my skill level.

I have almost 20yrs working on architectural and product rendering. Have my own studio now. I would recommend you find a job in a studio, you a learn a lot working in an established business, plus you learn about project managing and client relations. Project managing not only means managing the workforce, but also setting a workflow and pipeline. Don’t learn everything by yourself, you’ll pick up lots of bad habita you’ll need to hnlearn when working as a part of a team

What pisses me off is the customer thinking $20 is expensive… artists always seem to get the shaft…

$20 for two renders isn't cheap?? Dude, F this guy

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23
The thing is I don't even mind if they think it's expensive it's the fact that they found me via a post that includes my prices and only when I finish the work they tell me. If they just told me "I don't like it I'm not going to pay or use this" I wouldn't have had a problem.

Well since apparently I make art for free I might as well do it for some nice people. If anyone wants some free pixel art ( portrait , oc , pet, favorite characters or small landscapes ) Hit me up.

Hey I am interested in some pixel art of the dnd party I dm for. It would be 6 characters total. I would be able to send you pictures of the characters currently. How much do you think that would be?

I’m sorry this happened… did they pay you? Your prices are more than fair. Don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your prices!

If they haven't paid, and you find the image anywhere, you will probably have a case against them for copyright infringement. Google says you could get up to $30k, for each work infringed, in a lawsuit.

u/Z-man1973 Mar 20 '23
You can send them the renders, heavily watermarked and diminished file quality so they can’t use them

u/MorningRose666 Mar 20 '23
After having a similar situation I would only go as far as sketching/ base work then send it to the client for final tweaks and ask them to pay before finishing. I’d bend for half if they’re too hesitant but they’re not getting anything usable until they pay in full. Might turn some people away but it’s covering your time/ sanity and that’s the important thing at the end of it all. Hope this is just a bad egg for you 💕

In architecture you'd expect about $2000-$5000 per render, this seems like an absurd transaction to me arguing over $20. Like are you just doing this as a hobby? Or you're in a country with a favourable exchange rate?
2
u/Punctuation_Art Mar 21 '23
Lot of factors actually, where I live it's 2$/h minimum wage so it's a solid buck. It's a hobby and I'm still learning the ropes and I'm strapped for cash as my pc is dying so I'm offering cheap work so I can get some money to upgrade it.

Curious on the conversation prior to the work being done

u/Punctuation_Art Mar 20 '23
Just the details of what needed to be done, he sent me a model I ended up remaking and the usual details of what the render needs to look like. Based username btw!

They 100% knew your rate. They're playing dumb to get out of paying you.
In the future please watermark any assetts that have not been paid for.

u/akathatdude1 Mar 21 '23
Please blast this piece of shit and his business practices, no one should have to endure this, I’m sorry OP. Make sure this guy feels $20 worth of bullshit for his absurdity

That sounds like the sort of situation where you rely on an AI to give you the best value for your money - it's a great way to ensure you're optimizing resources while still getting maximum benefit.

Don't settle for "send whatever you want". You set a price, they pay it or they don't get the product. Otherwise you just encourage them to try this again in the future.
