An argument can be made that I got a free ragdoll cat but it was a weird situation that led up to it.

I would never expect to get any sort of "luxuary" breed for free that's bonkers!

37

u/BlueMoon5k Mar 19 '23

Got my ragdoll from a friend who had to give it up. Paid about $100 for it. Darn near free. Love her so much

14

u/Andyman0110 Mar 19 '23

Got a Himalayan for free too, the owner was going to give him to the spca. He's the absolute best, I have 0 complaints.

10

u/copamarigold Mar 19 '23

I got two Ragdolls free, they were retired breeders from a woman I purchased a kitten from years before.

Ragdolls are the most amazing cats ever.

u/Voyagers20 Mar 18 '23

Sphynx cats are extremely expensive and high maintenance. You're looking at thousands of dollars for a purebred sphynx. No one will just give one away for free, especially considering that they need special care (especially frequent baths, because their lack of fur causes oils to build up in their skin) and any decent breeder/owner will want to make sure the cat is going to a responsible owner.

117

u/DevilsAudvocate Mar 19 '23

I have a friend who has rescued 3 or 4 sphynx babies during her time volunteering. People really don't know the lengths they'll need to go to for proper care.

46

u/yelloworange01 Mar 19 '23

I have a Sphinx, they aren’t just high maintenance in terms of psychical care, they are CLINGY!!!! Mine has a lot of separation anxiety which causes him to wee in random areas (including on me in my bed so he’s not allowed in), and literally does not stop eating. I love him all the same though

15

u/pr1ncessazula Mar 20 '23

I have a toddler and a sphynx. the sphynx is FAR more clingly. I love him, but its like having another appendage.

14

u/yelloworange01 Mar 21 '23

He used to just squat and piss on me in the middle of the night. Like I’m right here bro what you anxious about. It isn’t a bladder control issue or anything, I’m thinking of asking my vet about anti anxiety treatment bc it can’t be nice for him when I leave the house

3

u/pr1ncessazula Mar 21 '23

HE PEED ON YOU?! awh nah

Baaaahaaa

61

u/SpiffyPaige143 Mar 19 '23

CB's like this are never responsible owners of whatever their asking for. Be it a pet, car, furniture, etc. If they aren't willing to or can't buy it, they aren't gonna be able or willing to fork over the money to take proper care of the thing they're asking for.

9

u/Jmaschino290 Mar 19 '23

If you can’t pay for a cat like that you sure as hell can’t pay for the up keep of them!

8

u/Voyagers20 Mar 19 '23

Exactly! If someone's really serious about wanting one, they'll be willing to pay the price and do the work. Even with our two moggie cats, there have been some vet emergencies with huge unexpected vet bills. But we make it work because they are family and their health is just as important as ours.

3

u/No-Albatross-7984 NEXT!! Mar 19 '23

It's for church! NEXT!

2

u/CTurple Apr 11 '23

I’m going to get hanged up on here, but could you please tell me what this is in reference to? I’ve read it so many times but just never knew what it meant..

2

u/No-Albatross-7984 NEXT!! Apr 11 '23

There was a lady asking for a large car or bus to loan for a church trip I believe. She was very rude about it. When people offered smaller vans, she'd dismiss them and demand another offer from someone else by posting an answer that just said "NEXT!!".

2

u/CTurple Apr 11 '23

JFC, what an asshole! Lmao, like, the balls on that one! Well, thank you so much for the explanation!

u/CampbellKitty Mar 19 '23

I've got one like that. He's 19 years old. I've had h 19 years. He came out of the womb trying to talk and hasn't stopped since. Be aware any other cats you get may copy and then you have a cats choir of your own. I have a 16 year old cat and 13 year old. Had them all since birth. They're an opinionated bunch. Maybe unrelated: I have severe tinnitus ::

63

u/hhamzarn Mar 19 '23

Siamese are super challenging because they're mouthy and hyper intelligent. I grew up raising cats but we bred Persians and American Exotics... both are dumb loveable puff balls. Like nothing going on upstairs at all. My least favorite breed, one that reminds me of the Siamese's at-times-asshat-nature, has always been the Abyssinians. They're mouthy and smart like the Siamese but they're natural born criminals. My mom's boss bred those abominations and when she was on the campaign to grand champion this one guy named Guiness, he came with us to shows every weekend for like 3 months straight. And it was my job to put him in the ring and take him back to our exhibitor booth. This cat made it his mission to escape from me whenever he could. I got some good cardio those few months. I hated that cat. It got to the point where I would just preemptively shout, "Cat loose" when I would walk him up so the show hall doors could be closed before he got to them should he slip my grip (yet again).

7

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce Mar 19 '23

My brother had one. He has this jumper with a large pocket that had no middle. He had to put it on after work so the cat could lie in it, or he would go mad and whine 😂 after meeting me within 10 minutes, the cat wouldn't leave me alone. It didn't have separation issues it was just demanding.

6

u/hhamzarn Mar 19 '23

All part of their psychological warfare. And the worst part is that they are the most beautiful babies. My mom was a vet tech for her boss' veterinarian clinic. So, you'd walk into the back room and be absolutely assaulted with a level of cuteness that could only be described as manipulative.

56

u/Feb10bbyaxe Mar 19 '23

I got what I thought was a white cat off Craigslist for $75 3 years ago… one vet trip and DNA test later he’s a flame point Siamese who’s 99% pure and 1% tabby.

He hasn’t shut up either, much less since he was raised by a husky.

14

u/SafelySolipsized Mar 19 '23

That’s pretty cool, but I got an elusive “domestic shorthair” for FREE.

I opened the front door one day and she was standing on the porch. She walked right past me into the house and headed to the kitchen as if she’d lived here for years.

I’ve thought about putting her up for sale, considering her breed and all, but she’s honestly such a bratty pain in the ass that I’d feel guilty unloading her on anyone. I’m stuck with her, I guess.

11

u/Feb10bbyaxe Mar 19 '23

Will admit he’s a hecking cute drama queen

4

u/Trueloveis4u Mar 19 '23

No flame point is technically pure as they get the orange color from orange tabbies.

10

u/Magical_Olive Mar 19 '23

I've never been too interested in breeds (my cats are a fluffy one and a black one) but Reddit has been spamming me with flame points lately and I definitely would get one if I came across one at the shelter!

14

u/SleeplessTaxidermist Mar 19 '23

My offspring have a Grey American Chonk Cat and a Tabby American Sport Cat.

The American Chonk is VERY opinionated, but obviously from the finest of Chonk bloodlines, sporting a muscular chonkness and dense, brick-like weight that's simultaneously noodly. The Chonk is also known for having a incredible sixth sense for laying in inconvenient places.

The American Sport is much quieter with a far stiffer suspension, noted in the Don't Touch Me Mode in which the American Sport will stiffly brace all four legs to avoid any human contact, regardless of the situation. A one-person cat, it also comes equipped with an exceptional Judgmental Stare.

4

u/kaz0la Mar 19 '23

What about the cat? /s

-13

u/Blueduck554 Mar 19 '23

Yea man, wives are like that

30

u/Hydrolt Mar 19 '23

It does happen, I got a bengal for free (just pure dumb luck but I didn’t ask the void of the internet for one), but they knew we would be loving kitty parents, not some rando on Facebook

20

u/swearingino Mar 19 '23

I also got a purebred bengal for free. Had him a week and then the owner came begging for him back. I couldn’t deny their bond they already had.

5

u/Hydrolt Mar 19 '23

Aww. Well the first owner of mine was a little old lady who just couldn’t take care of it anymore, and the second set loved her, but they already had like 5 cats (and she hates other cats), so very lucky for us

17

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

It's not likely to be free, but I am in some Bengal cat rescue groups and they do come up as being rehomed for a lot cheaper than they are from a breeder.

18

u/hhamzarn Mar 19 '23

It's okay to place an animal into a loving home without requiring the adopter to pay big money but, man, people don't realize how much work goes into gate keeping to make sure the animal ends up in a safe new home situation.

9

u/michizzle82 Mar 19 '23

My friends family ended up with a bengal pretty cheap. She was a rescue from a hoarding situation. That said, the cat had a LOT of behavioral issues and anxiety due to so much inbreeding and food insecurity before being rescued. She was on special medication and food that was pretty pricey

3

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

Yeah every one on that site seems to have some kind of issues.

I got one that is supposedly half Bengal for cheap on craigslist and her biggest issue is she's too friendly. Like, I can't sleep because she wants so much love unless I lock her in the bathroom 😂 seriously the sweetest cat I've met.

Although who knows if she's really half Bengal. She's got a spotted stomach but she's grey striped everywhere else.

3

u/michizzle82 Mar 19 '23

They got theirs from a legit bengal rescue in their area 😅 she was on anxiety medication like her entire life

2

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

Oh no lol

I found two in local shelters but neither would work for me just from the behavioral notes. I keep my eyes peeled but lll probably be waiting til I die lol

Maybe one day I'll come into millions and not worry about dropping 2k on a cat lol

3

u/michizzle82 Mar 19 '23

Right 🤣I’d love a sphynx but they’re pricey and I want to go to an ethical breeder! Sometimes you can get lucky and get a retired queen for a little less. I know some people that have happened to with pure bred dogs

11

u/CoconutxKitten Mar 19 '23

You’re also probably gatekeeping who gets them because bengals really aren’t a great pet due to them being hybrids

2

u/space_pirate420 Mar 19 '23

Half the bengals I see given up for free, it’s because they piss everywhere :/

3

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

Yeah that seems to be a common note I see. . . Automatic no, cat pee will ruin your house. . .

3

u/space_pirate420 Mar 19 '23

I will say, I got a secondhand bengal and Siamese pair from one of those groups though, and my oh my did I luck out. The Siamese is a little destructive, he destroys carpet if a door is shut. But the bengal is a complete angel. He loves attention, isn’t destructive, always uses his litter box. I can’t believe he’s an F4 with how well behaved and mannered he is. I’ve had bengals before, and all of them were great, but each did one thing that was a problem lol. Not this guy. I love how he talks to me, and he constantly wants attention. I will never be without a bengal. 🖤

4

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

I thought Bengals were supposed to be great yet energetic pets! Haven't done too much research though as I'm not seriously considering spending that much.

I do have one that I got off Craigslist who is supposedly half bengal. She looks a little like one but could also pass for a regular tabby. I also saw her supposed mom and she was definitely Bengal. And she is literally the best cat I've ever met. Her issue is she's too friendly and is an endless pit of love and affection lol

2

u/space_pirate420 Mar 19 '23

They definitely are those things, but also have a tendency to be destructive and urinate in places they shouldn’t. I’ve had issues with both in my history with owning bengals.

3

u/Disastrous-Box-4304 Mar 19 '23

The urinating is concerning. . . I couldn't keep a cat that chronically did that. Good to know.

10

u/OverwhelmingCacti Mar 19 '23

Didn’t Rachel pay like a grand on one of those on Friends? And since tv is real life, I assume that means they’re always expensive irl, too.

10

u/BadKittyVortex Mar 19 '23

What is this, some kind of snake?

4

u/pr1ncessazula Mar 20 '23

yeah, they’re expensive. and clingly. and oily. and they have a meow that mimics a howling from the depths of hell, which is fun at 5 am.

but theyre totally worth it lol

11

u/BennyCroz Mar 20 '23

If you can't afford to buy a pet, you can't afford to keep a pet.

Note: I have absolutely nothing against free or rescued animals, and I'm aware that a lot of "designer" animals are overly expensive. That said, if you NEED a free one due to lack of funds, then how do you expect to pay for things like food and vet bills etc?

8

u/swearingino Mar 19 '23

Back in October I got a tabby pointed siamese kitten from a shelter for 40. She’s a velcro cat that sticks to me and sleeps under my blanket at night at my feet to keep them warm.

9

u/Jedimasteryony Mar 19 '23

My wife brought home a free Burmese a handful of years ago. The breeder tried to give him away and was going to put him down because he had a defect and he couldn’t be sold. The defect: the bone at the base of the sternum is supposed to hook in, his hooks out. It doesn’t hurt, causes no problems, isn’t even cosmetic. It’s only when petting his tummy that you can sometimes feel it. Oh, and my wife is the vet that was going to be putting him down, she just made sure to ask all the questions. She likes to send me pics of animals and either ask me what a good name is or “will you love me” as a caption, then bring the animal home.

8

u/bodyguard114 Mar 19 '23

I ended up with a purebred Sphnyx for free. He started off as a foster, and then he didn't want to go back. They still visit him whenever.

7

u/mightymouse2975 Mar 19 '23

When I was a teenager I was out for a walk when I noticed this neighborhood punk kid throwing rocks at a car (already bad) then I realized there was a cat hiding under the car. I scared off the kid and coaxed the cat out from under the car. Covered in motor oil & fleas. I took said cat home & my mother bathed it. After a good clean up it appeared to be a siamese kitten. We put up signs, nobody called. Took her to the vet, no chip. We ended up keeping her and at some point did DNA testing on her. She was a purebred siamese. Once in a lifetime opportunity I think, ever since then my mother has paid hundreds of dollars for her two new siameses (the original one put my mom on a siamese kick).

6

u/2-timeloser2 Mar 19 '23

Kind of person that should never have a pet.

5

u/Jasiboo Mar 19 '23

Meanwhile, we have thousands of cats being euthanized and in shelters.

4

u/parkmeeae Mar 19 '23

I worked with someone who bred Orientals. She offered me a free kitten. She said she could tell I would take good care of it. I declined the offer because my current cat doesn't like other cats.

4

u/sun-devil2021 Mar 19 '23

I got a Siamese for free bc a stray gray cat came into my friends garage and just gave birth under the cars, 6/7 came out as grey stripped cats but one came out Siamese and I got that one, obviously not pure bread tho

4

u/Haskap_2010 Mar 24 '23

It is possible to find purebreds in shelters, but they certainly aren't free.

I'm willing to bet this person wanted an unneutered one for breeding.

8

u/SongIcy4058 Mar 19 '23

When I was in high school we adopted a Himalayan and a Persian (together, bonded pair) from a local shelter. Not free but like $100 adoption fee.

Both of those cats ended up having horrific genetic diseases that cost upwards of $10k in vet care. We have no idea if they were inbred in shitty conditions or if it was just bad luck, but that's the roll of the dice when you adopt any cat I guess.

21

u/hhamzarn Mar 19 '23

Strangely enough, one of my best friends just adopted a sphinx cat that the owner needed rehomed at no cost to her. She's a wonderful person and I'm glad she's the one who took the cat because, as a person who was raised in a house that bred show cats (I don't want to talk about it), we wouldn't even sell our retired females for less than $100. The reason for this is that free cats often end up being used as bait in dog fights. Additionally, if the person can afford $100 to buy the animal, they can most likely afford food and appropriate vet care. It's probably my upbringing but I always cringe at posts either looking for free animals or giving them away.

7

u/PsychoMouse Mar 19 '23

Hey guys, I’m looking for atleast 4 Pomsky puppy’s for free. If anyone can point me in that direction. I’m not asking for a lot. They’re only puppies after all.

2

u/EggandSpoon42 Mar 19 '23

We dog sat a $2000 dog for my husband’s friend. Fuuuck. Sweetest thing. I was more anxious than necessary that something would happen to that dog. Especially since it was for a couple months.

1

u/PsychoMouse Mar 19 '23

Yeah. Pomsky are insanely adorable and great dogs but my god. They are not cheap. They were the most expense dog I could think of for my post. Outside of maybe cloned dogs lol.

3

u/jangkrik404 Mar 19 '23

My granma did get a ragdoll from her friend lmao. Not purebred but the kitty still got the trademark looks- point coloration, light blue disney-esque eyes and all. Like damn isn't she the prettiest cat I've ever seen irl 😂

3

u/BeefInBlackBeanSauce Mar 19 '23

I got my Siemese cat from an animal shelter, so it does happen. Just paid the shelter fee.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 19 '23

It's not that hard to get a siamese for free tho

3

u/Sicks6sixxx Mar 19 '23

At first I was like where Does it say she wants it for free? Lmao. Silly me.

4

u/FuckThisManicLife Mar 19 '23

I wish I didn’t have to edit it so much but I don’t want y’all to know my town name.

I wish I didn’t have to edit it so much but I don’t want y’all to know my town name.

9

u/ICP_chemist Mar 19 '23

Where does it say “free”?

18

u/FuckThisManicLife Mar 19 '23

It’s a Free Pet group, that’s the only part at the top I didn’t black out.

5

u/ICP_chemist Mar 19 '23

Ah missed that part.

7

u/cat_romance Mar 19 '23

The group name is FREE PETS

8

u/Petraretrograde Mar 19 '23

The only Sphynx I've ever seen for free was a neutered male that wouldn't stop marking. I have a spayed female and I love her, she has chosen my 14yo son as Her Boy, but they are NOT cheap. But they are worth saving for.

2

u/Yellow_Submarine8891 Mar 19 '23

I feel like people don't understand that purebred means expensive and no one is just going to give those cats away for free

2

u/Acamith Mar 19 '23

Got my two Siamese for free. And the one that recently passed of 20 years for free as well. Siamese are the only cats I usually own.

2

u/hepburn17 Mar 20 '23

I have a purebred Bengal, needs alot of care, he cost us a fortune and still does and he's not as expensive or demanding as a sphinx

2

u/Efficient_Second4464 Mar 20 '23

i hate people who ask for free very expensive purebred animals, whereas others are paying the full price to get a regular tabby (still rlly cute tho)

-21

u/TheOnesWithin Mar 19 '23

This is not a choosy beggar.

People are allowed to ask for what they want.

A choosy beggar would also be asking for delivery and free shots and toys and ext ext

14

u/SoundsFeasible Mar 19 '23

I don’t think the poster is being some terrible person but isn’t this the definition of a choosy beggar? Choosy as they were asking for a specific high-end breed. Beggar as they were willing to spend no money.

-14

u/MooshuCat Mar 19 '23

They may not have been aware that those breeds of cats are normally very expensive.

7

u/SoundsFeasible Mar 19 '23

Again, I want to reiterate that I don’t think the person posting this has committed some great sin by asking for these cats. But surely ignorance doesn’t change the reality that this person is being choosy. I mean they are literally asking for a PUREBRED cat. Even if you ignore the breed completely, it still seems choosy.

11

u/CoconutxKitten Mar 19 '23 edited Mar 19 '23

Wanting a free cat is AND specifying breed is literally a choosy beggar

1

u/olivethesane Apr 02 '23

I think you mean “etc” as in “et cetera”.

-20

u/Aggravatedangela Mar 19 '23

Many years ago, while having my first manic episode, I felt especially funny. I scrolled the pet section on Craigslist. One ad was looking for a ragdoll cat or special breed like that, for free. I found pics of some weird desert cats, like wild animals, and used my new dummy email address to send them to her and told her my cat is (x breed) and needs a new home. I said she's free but she needs a special diet of very fresh raw meat and I was struggling to keep it up-- that's it, very ambiguous. She told me it was probably illegal to have that cat and she wasn't interested.

Another was looking for a golden retriever puppy. I found a pic of a black lab taking a shit, with one back leg completely shaved (I assume from surgery). The lady responded and said that's not a golden retriever. Didn't say anything about the shaved leg or the fact that I'd sent her a pic of a dog in the act of shitting.

I laughed so fucking hard through all of this, but my friends and coworkers didn't seem to find it very funny. Even though my meds work well now, it's still kinda funny to me.

2

u/DogHikerGal Mar 19 '23

I think your story is funny!

I put a pic of my oddly-shaped min pin (he had a congenital condition which left his back end shriveled) parked on a pile of dirt on CL. In the description I asked if anyone knows what the creature in my yard is, and I included details that it seems gentle and loves hot dogs. The replies I got were hilarious!

-5

u/realistSLBwithRBF Mar 19 '23

The only reference of “free” is the one comment which comes across as the person leaving it on an assumption.

Either there’s missing context or this is simply the commenter making an incorrect assumption.

11

u/LBelle0101 NEXT!! Mar 19 '23

The title, there’s the blacked out part, then it literally says “free pets”

1

u/realistSLBwithRBF Mar 19 '23

Oh, I didn’t see the dark title.

Thanks for pointing to that. I guess I hadn’t seen it because I use dark mode myself for Reddit. It blend right in.

Lol wowzers with the downvotes because the title of the blacked out area is so small. Redditers gonna Reddit (“~)/
