Promo Sunday Hi Reddit — We're the team behind Halide and we've made a *free*, fun app to turn your iPad into an HDMI monitor. We're calling it Orion, and I'd love to hear what you think! (promo codes inside, too)
👋 Hey folks — you may know us from such apps as Halide, Spectre and Skylight. We usually do iPhone camera reviews every year (working hard on it!) but this year we decided to do something different.
While we have been busy with iOS 17 and new iPhones, we also wanted to take about a month and a half to make something cool for a new iPadOS 17 feature: UVC.
iPads with USB-C ports can now connect external cameras. As a fun extra side effect, that meant support for USB-C capture cards. These little dongles can let you hook up an HDMI device, and we thought it'd be really great to use that to build an app that let you use your iPad as an external monitor.
What for, you might ask?
Well, you could hook up your Nintendo Switch to play a game. Or a camera, to check framing and exposure before or while you record or capture shots. You could use it as an external screen for your Mac, your Steam Deck, or anything with an HDMI output, really! We put some examples on the site.
We had a *ton* of fun building this. We wanted it to kind of showcase that apps can be fun, whimsical, and artistic. We based styling off the heyday of excitement for electronics: the 80s.
Orion opens up to a box, styled after an old TV box. You have to unbox it to start, after which you get a little fun surprise (sound on) and get a retro styled manual. We offer a demo mode, so give it a shot! We made a custom pixel font for the app, as well as effects that give it a sort of retro-VCR look. There's lots of fun touches in there: check it out :)
——
Now for the price. Orion is free. It does require an USB-C Capture Card - which we do not make. Any should work.
No ads, no tracking (no, really, no third party libraries, no analytics, zero). If you want to play retro games or Switch in 4K with AI 4k upscaling (plus get some cool extra icons in the future), get CRT Emulation filters for retro games, extra brightness adjustment settings as well as support our work on the app you can buy Orion Pro for $5 - once, no subscription.
But it's completely optional, and we will never bug you for it or reduce Orion's functionality.
Now, free often comes with a catch. Halide is our big app: it takes lots of work to keep it working great with new cameras, and with new features every few months and that's why we charge what we charge for it. We hope that Orion will be 'done' with a few more updates.
Here's where you come in!
I'd love to hear what else you'd like to see in an app like this. What is Orion missing for you? I have generated a bunch of Orion Pro codes and I'll give them out to great suggestions.
Thank you reddit — I hope you all enjoy Orion!

... and some recommended accessories, like dongles and stuff.
tldr: New app, free, makes iPad HMDI monitor. Halide devs maybe had a little too much fun building this. $5 pro upgrade, optional. Suggest features you'd like to see for a promo code.

Promo Sunday Whats life without a little friendly competition? Also made a simple free UVC HDMI streaming app just for fun. A very lightweight monitor called Dongled with a focus on simplicity.
Hi everyone, I’m a freelance developer and wanted to promo Sunday another simple free app I made for UVC streaming. The app is called Dongled, and I so far have been focusing on monitoring digital microscopes and video game consoles.
For those who don't know UVC is for viewing a wired HDMI stream on your iPad. It allows you to connect an external video source using iOS17's new 'external' video device calls.
I work in live AV so I have had access to test Dongled on a fairly wide range of high end capture cards include Blackmagc ATEMs as well as cheaper cards. Dongled supports both stereo and mono audio sources. Speaking of black magic, there are also some tricks at play hiding behind the simple interface to prevent things like frame rate tearing on cheaper capture cards for gamers and prevent dropped audio frames. Dongled is also lightweight weighing in at only about 650kb. As far as I am aware, Dongled is the only capture software that supports the 4k capture sessions of high end USBC microscopes.
I would love to develop the app further if Apple ever makes the external device call available for iPhone 15, but so far its just for iPad. But if someone has a great idea how to expand the app further or carve out a niche given there are now several of these programs on the app store, let me know in the comments!
https://Dongled.app
This was my first published app and I would be happy to hear if it was useful!

Promo Sunday I made fully customisable interactive widgets for my todo app that allow you to scroll through task lists and page between different days of your calendar.
Hey r/apple,
The title may have been slightly confusing so do watch this short video to see the widgets in all its glory!
Yata is a fully themable, powerful task manager and daily planner that implements the GTD philosophy with a focus on time-blocking by combining tasks and events in a unified Schedule.
It is available on iOS and iPadOS for free with no ads, IAP or data collection!
If you like what you see, do check out Yata on the App Store, I'd love to hear your feedback and insights to help make the app even better!
Promo Sunday I've created Simplesong app that brings iPod, Winamp and many more Music + Radio Players to Home Screen via Interactive Widgets
I've recently released iOS app that brings some of the most legendary Music Players directly to Home Screen allowing to control playback of Apple Music and for those not using the Apple Music, allowing to control playback of any Radio Station in the World. There are numerous Widgets available - iPod shuffle, iPod classic, Winamp, Modern & Retro players...
All of the Widgets are configurable with possibility to set different appearances, some Widgets can also be configured for using transparent background. And apart of playback control Widgets, there are some Visualiser Widgets with animations available as well.
App is available FREE, with few Widgets locked under one time InApp purchase:

Promo Sunday I’ve created an app that syncs workouts to your Apple Watch ⌚️
Hello r/Apple 👋
I’m proud to announce that this week, I’ve release my second app! It leverage the new WorkoutKit APIs available in iOS 17 and watchOS 10.
My new app is called WatchFit and you can check it out here: https://apps.apple.com/app/6464086175
WatchFit is the best way to create custom workouts for a variety of sports and then add them to the Workout app of your Apple Watch.
🚀 Main features
▶ CUSTOM WORKOUTS Configure warmup, cooldown or even intervals. Each step can be "open" or time based. Some sports also support distance based steps, like running and cycling.
▶ ADD WORKOUTS TO APPLE WATCH You can choose which custom workouts to add to the Workout app of your Apple Watch. They will then be available for you to complete.
▶ SCHEDULE WORKOUTS Scheduled workouts are automatically added to your Apple Watch. The Workout app will surface them at the appropriate time.
▶ SEE WHAT'S COMMING See your upcoming workouts and which one was completed - or missed!
▶ NO ACCOUNT REQUIRED Your custom workouts are automatically synced to your secure iCloud account. If you change device or delete the app, they will still be waiting for you when you come back.
▶ PRIVACY TAKEN SERIOUSLY WatchFit does not use user analytics nor account system and purchase are processed in an anonymous way. WatchFit cannot read your workouts in anyway. It can only know if scheduled workouts were completed or not.
💸 Pricing model I’ve tried to stick a balance between getting fairly paid for my work while giving flexibility to the users on how to pay.
The app is free to download and you can create any number of workouts without restrictions. That allows you to see if the app will respond to your needs. To unlock the Send to Apple Watch and Schedule feature, you need to be a Premium user.
You can either choose to subscribe (comes with a free 7 days trial) or buy it as a one-time purchase. I avoided setting an absurd price for the lifetime option, like some apps do, so that it remains a viable and reasonable option.
Monthly: 1.99 USD Yearly: 9.99 USD ($0.83 / month) Lifetime: 22.99 USD
(prices can vary by region)
WatchFit will continue to evolve and get better over time. I have a list with a number of great features that are coming!
https://apps.apple.com/app/6464086175
I’m looking forward to your feedback 💬
- Mathieu
EDIT: I should have included some promo codes, here are 10 codes for 50% off Annual Premium
